WASHINGTON, March 7 (Reuters) – The FederalReserve will likely need to raise interest rates morethan expected in response to recent strong data and isprepared to move in larger steps if the “totality” ofincoming information suggests tougher measures areneeded to control inflation, Fed Chair Jerome Powelltold U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday.

“The latest economic data have come in stronger thanexpected, which suggests that the ultimate level ofinterest rates is likely to be higher than previouslyanticipated,” the U.S. central bank chief said in hissemi-annual testimony before the Senate BankingCommittee.”
